Kayla Naomi Watkins is a Philadelphia-based filmmaker from Baltimore with years of experience as a media educator, documentary cinematographer, color correction artist, and producer of several short films. She has been filming since 2009 covering issues that impact Black, brown, poor, and femme people. Watkins has produced several award winning documentaries and shows with her work at WHYY, including In the Margins, a historical web series for PBS Origins, Delishtory, a food history show with PBS Food, and a social video series for Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley.
In the Margins covers the history they didn’t teach in school, exploring obscure, yet captivating tales that offer unique insights into their time and place. From PBS Origins, the home of history shows from PBS Digital Studios.
Bumpa is a documentary in conversation with working dancers who explore the community, therapy, and controversy surrounding twerking and whining, two ancient African dance forms. It is both a visual centerpiece for Black diasporic people gathering to dance and a chance to reflect on our assumptions about how and why these kinds of expressions should be protected.
